We're All A Little Goofy

Your pictures should reflect your true self

We all have those silly little things about ourselves, some we hide and some we allow others to see. Maybe you're too embarrassed to let anyone see them or maybe you just don't talk about them with anyone else, but they're there regardless. Now I don't say the word "quirk" as if it's something bad, it's just a thing that is a part of us and for that reason is of the utmost importance to me to include in my work. The best things about having your photos taken, in my opinion anyways, is that they should (and typically do) bring out the real you. A camera has this wonderful effect, be it on purpose or on accident, to tear away all the falsities and reveal our true selves to the world. The only caveat to this though is that you have to be willing to let it.

I'll be the first to admit I have more than my fair share of quirks, but I'm not ashamed of them nor do I hide them because it's who I really am. One of my more recently acquire3d quirks that I'm sure many of you will be able to identify with is making an absolute fool of myself yo make my daughter laugh. Whether it's making funny voices, tickling her mercilessly or having an impromptu dance party (it's not a pretty sight, trust me), I never hesitate to stop what I'm doing and make sure she happy and laughing whenever possible.

Take this post's header image for example, this couple was one of the most fun engagement sessions I had done in a long time. I asked them to bring some props with that help express them and who they are as a couple, boy did they deliver. They brought a blanket and some books because they love to read together, a few bottles of their favorite adult beverages because that's how they like to unwind sometimes and the crown jewel of some Dungeons and Dragons dice because it's a game they both enjoyed together. The best thing about all of this? This was completely unprovoked or coaxed out of them, this was all things they thought of off of a simple prompt to be themselves and they absolutely nailed it!

When you work with me there are the obvious questions to find out more about you and what you're looking for, but it won't stop there. I'll want to know about your hobbies, what sort of things are you really passionate about and most importantly what are your quirks. I urge you to be as open and honest as you can when answering these questions, these types of answers help more than you know and can make a world of difference for the session.
