Dominance on Display

Starting with a new team is always equal parta exciting and nerve wracking for me. One the one hand, it’s always great to start a relationship with a new team and cover their season, but on the other hand it can also be anxiety inducing making sure I set up a repeatable baseline of expectations for the boosters, parents and players. Enter the Farmington Tigers girls hockey team, ready to take on their 2025/2026 season with most of their roster from the prior year and coming off both a section championship and a state title berth,

The Tigers girls program is coached by Jon Holmes, who closed out the season with breaking the record for most wins in the school’s history, set out to improve upon their 2024/2025 season where they won a bid to the state tournament, but ended up losing out to Edina. I covered a few of their games that season as part of my role as Media Coordinator with Farmington High School that season, but far from enough to fully encapsulate what this team was capable of.

The girls were lead this season by seniors Makena Underwood (goalie), Addison Trapp (defense) and Charlotte Mahowald (defense). While it’s important to mention the leadership of the team, it’s also equally important to note that this team is stacked with talented players from juniors down to freshman and 7th graders that have been playing together for almost 10 years that are all-in on the team and the goals they set out to achieve.

I covered the team’s home games this season at Schmitz-Maki Arena in Farmington and their playoff games, which ended up being 17 games in total as they fought their way to the program’s first ever South Suburban Conference championship to a 5th place overall finish in the state tournament and closed out their season with a win at Tria Rink in St. Paul as part of the MSHSL State Tournament. The team ended up with a total of 24 wins, eight shutouts and countless come-from-behind wins after being down by two or more goals. It’s no secret this team is going to be competitive for the next few years at minimum and built on the back of a solid youth program in Farmington and I’m excited to see what next year holds for this teams of gifted players and coaches.
