Putting women in the spotlight

It’s no secret that women’s sports as a whole have made monumental strides in popularity and reach in recent years. You have bonafide superstar players in the WNBA packing the seats and making teams book larger arenas to accommodate the demand, women’s lacrosse getting their own league within the PLL family and a growing professional volleyball league expanding right here to Minnesota in the coming years just to name a few examples.

One of my favorite things about covering women’s sports, outside of the raw emotion, is the camaraderie and support they all give each other. A prime example I’ve seen more recently is the Tigers girls taking youth players under their wings and helping mentor them to be better players and grow their abilities. While this is obviously a great thing for the future of the high school program, it also helps nurture success and support within the youth ecosystem and ideally fosters more participation and growth of the sport overall.

The idea in my head is partnering with both a youth program and the high school program to give a “from the top down” feel for the sport. Ideally this would be covering as much of the youth program across all ages as well as some high school games to show what girls can hope to achieve and learn from participating in the sport. Obviously, I’m just one person and can only do so much on my own, but hopefully this can grow and others can take the idea and run with it in their own way.

Here are a few ideas I have to make this happen, but I’m open to discussing any ideas teams may have:

  1. Partner with a city’s youth program and the high school program for a season. Cover as much of the program (U8 up to varsity) in the season as possible.
  2. Provide game photos as well as a media day session for the teams. These photos would be used for blog posts to celebrate the girls and their achievements at the end of the season, maybe even player bios and interviews to add a more personal touch.
  3. Provide the youth programs and high school programs with the photos to bolster their websites and help promote future growth and success of their athletes.
  4. Work with more girl's and women's teams to do their media days and help with their content for the season.

If your team is interested in working together please reach out here, I'd love to hear from you!
