US Ice Cross - ATSX 500

February 17, 2019

I had the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and shoot another non-traditional sport this weekend in ice cross, better known by most as Crashed Ice as coined by Red Bull. This high adrenaline race is done by athletes wearing hockey equipment and skating down an ice laden course complete with sharp turns, steep drops and big jumps.

The event was at Mont du Loc Resort in Superior, WI. This was about a 2.5 hour trip each way for me from the Twin Cities, but with the event starting at 2pm, I thankfully didn't need to leave incredibly early to get there to allow for setup and scoping out the course. The whole day it was around 20*, which any native Midwesterner will tell you is a pretty nice day for the winter.

This was the main event for the race, so all qualifying had been done the days prior to this. The field started out with 64 racers in the men's bracket and 32 racers in the women's bracket. There was also some costume races and some mountain bike races to break up the action and keep things interesting for the crowd.

These events are tied into the Red Bull Crashed Ice points totals, so the competition was stiff and fierce all day with no one wanting to lose out on valuable overall potential points. The men's round of 64 ran quickly with races starting as soon as the one prior had concluded. Once that was concluded the women's round of 32 commenced and a lot of very close races came out of the women hoping to work towards a final race spot.

When all was said and done, both brackets worked their way down to the final four competitors. Both finals races were fast-paced and close from the top to the bottom. Ultimately Red Bull favorite and Minnesota native Cameron Naasz took the win for the men and Amanda Trunzo took the win for the women.

Overall it was a great event with awesome weather and a very accommodating venue in Mont du Loc. I want to thank the US Ice Cross Association for having me out and allowing me to shoot the event, I had a blast and I hope to shoot one again soon!
